When the Falmouth MRC was considering a new, small and easily transportable exhibition layout to mark its 60th anniversary year, thoughts turned to a compact branch terminus scheme which could be operated by two people and transported in the back of one or two cars.

It was also felt it would be a good opportunity to demonstrate a project that could be undertaken by a keen newcomer to the hobby, to produce a layout that is operationally satisfying with sufficient scenic detail to develop new modelling skills but be completed within a realistic and attainable timescale.

The brief was for a scheme 12ft x 2ft, a size we felt could be reasonably accommodated in the average home, and which conveniently broke down into three standard units. We also wanted the maximum amount of layout on view which dictated an integral ‘off-stage’ area contained within the layout footprint as opposed to an additional storage yard.

Trenance uses ready made Peco code 75 track throughout and is based on the GWR branch line terminus at Tetbury for the trackplan. Like most rural stations it was a long thin site, so it has been compressed to fit in the space available including shortening of the run round loop. We also relocated the station to our own ‘patch’ in Cornwall and decided on the name Trenance.

The station building is based on one of William Clarke's classic designs which cropped up all over the GWR on absorbed lines where he was employed as engineer. The basic structure was based on Abbotsbury but with alterations to create a forecourt entrance and the lavatory block transposed to the opposite end.

The goods shed was also based on Abbotsbury but with the addition of a lean-to office. The locomotive shed was based on Wallingford, mainly because it had square which suited the timescale for construction. The signalbox is the standard Mackenzie & Holland design using the Ratio kit upper works but with a scratchbuilt base

For its Great Electric Train Show appearance, the layout will be set in the 1930s with suitable GWR motive power in operation.
